Esteemed faces of labors
The author's preface
Work with their hands, smell the sweetness of harvest and forget about the sweat.
The labors in the photos actually exist in our life. Through the view finder, I saw their hardworking faces. I observed them and pressed the shutter. Yes, their smiles can be forever saved in freeze-frame photos but the bitter behind them can only be tasted by themselves.
The large amount of labor used to be the most important workforce in Taiwan. However, the advanced technology and the withering traditional industries result in reduced number of labor force. In order to record the portraits of labors, I went to a lot of different occupational courses. I thought I was going to see groups of labors but owing to the modernization and computerization of industries, what I most frequently saw was a spacious plant with only few workers. The number of workers in traditional industries was even fewer. This means a certain traditional handcraft industries are faced with tremendous danger. People are least willing to take heavy labors. Therefore, traditional crafts that require labors and skills are gradually disappearing in this era.
There are bitter-sweets in all occupations. Some people work in the sky while the others work under the ground. Some workers have to endure scorching high temperature while other workers work in freezing environment. When asked of taking photos, the first reaction of many of them was always, "what's worth taking?"They think they merely do what they have to do, which are nothing precious or respectable. They complained about having to leave their works for the photo-shooting.
The concept "labor leads to harvest" formulates the pragmatic characteristics of Taiwanese labors. "A footstep leads to another" illustrates how Taiwan developed to what it is like today from traditional industries in the past. Thought the quantity of labors is gradually decreasing, however the society is transformed, there are always a group of people, working silently to support the operation of our society. When these labor people raise their heads, having their sweat drops to the soil, they are showing us the most beautiful "esteemed faces" of them.
